Film Trailer – Combat Obscura

KABUL, Afghanistan — Former Marine Miles Lagoze hopes his film “Combat Obscura” will alter the “sanitized and sanctified view of the military” many Americans hold by showing them his view of what combat is actually like.

“It’s important because if you worship the military too much, you lose track of why we’re actually at war and the underlying issues that are causing it,” Lagoze told Stars and Stripes during a phone interview before the film’s release on Friday.

The documentary — a patchwork of scenes showing Marines smoking marijuana while on patrol in Afghanistan, swearing at children and talking lightly of killing innocent people — goes far to challenge the ubiquitous label of “hero” frequently bestowed on American servicemembers.

I have never thought any member of the military was a choir boy except for maybe a Chaplin. I have great admiration and respect for the Marines and all branches of our branches of our military, especially the Marines. I always have, even from the time I was a child and this hit piece courtesy of this Lagoze character will not change that. I suspect Lagoz was not suitable for combat (a cowardly wimp) so they gave him a camera to carry around. My guess he just didn’t fit in and was seen by his fellow soldiers nothing to be proud of as a member of the Marine Corps. Perhaps even an embarrassment to them. He may have been razzed a little and got his feelings hurt and now it is payback time and the SNAKE strikes. A real Marine does not turn traitor to his brothers. I look forward to hearing about a Leatherneck stomping Mr. Lagoze’s wimpy.lying, vindictive ,sissy ass.

I understand well the power of government/military brainwashing. This mental conditioning has allowed these monsters to shatter the foundations of this nation. We now defend the indefensible — and this is how our political machine and our military-industrial-complex came to be in this sorry state.

Instead of attacking the whistle-blower, we should collectively hailing them as the real, true heros. They are shining the light on the cockroaches. These grunts mirror their organization — they are directly supporting an entity that has disappeared 21+ trillion dollars and murdered uncounted non-combatant civilians.

I wonder …… when the 9/11 grand jury goes public, will you still be waving the flag for the perpetual pentagon war machine?

you sound like a child born from a baby boomer and badly pampered and spoiled.

Takes toughness to get thru combat and utilizing coping mechanism to push forward. So what you saw or heard doesn’t mean they have no conscience or sense of inhumanity. Think of the many veterans who lived during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam….they probably saw and knew things that could have been more shocking to you. Most never spoke of the horrible side of war. They risked their lives, appreciated and craved peace, provided us the best environment they could and probably why we grew up such ingrates and many very selfish.

That fink, the whistleblower, if he had followed the chain of command, it would have been taken care of without the negative publicity and putting our boys in a bad light.

Some may be bad, but the men with the most salt I’ve ever known, have been U.S. Marines. When you need someone to risk life and limb saving the needy, you call a Marine.
Look at the goat humping soldiers of the in-breeders our Marines are fighting. Imagine what you would see on one of their “behind the scenes” videos.
First they should make everyone in the viewing audiences watch a film about the countless Marines over the years who have gave all, showed the most bravery, to save others. The audience should be made to see young 18 or 19 year olds throwing their bodies on live grenades to save their brothers, and to save innocents, even innocents who wanted to kill them. Show the mothers of countless brave young men who wont get to hold their boys again, wont get to have grandchildren, because of the bravery, and sacrifice of their young Marine sons.

War is a dirty business. War is also hell, and it is good that it is, else we’d come to love it too much.

Making jokes about killing innocents and actually doing it are two different things. There were all sorts of jokes and stories about dragging VC through the treetops with Hueys to get the others to talk. Hogwash. Everyone HEARD about atrocities being committed by fellow Americans in Vietnam, but when it came time to testify, damned few could say they actually saw these things and could name names. Presidential candidate John Kerry said he heard about atrocities, but when put on the spot, he could not say he ever witnessed any being committed by US forces. At least atrocities committed by US troops. The VC were pretty damned good at atrocities against their own people. The same Marines in Afghanistan who joked about killing civilians would likely risk their lives to save an Afghan child.

Many times Marines and soldiers in combat are just mimicking lines and scenes form movies which are pure fiction. Almost all the rest of the talk is pure “sea stories” (also known as BS). Troops in combat can get gallows humor real quick. Gallows humor is a coping mechanism. They may talk about taking ears, and cutting off enemy heads and putting them along a trail and all sorts of heinous stuff, but they don’t do it. It’s all about; “What if we did this – it would be a great joke on the enemy and scare him witless”.

Young Marines or soldiers in combat can become brutalized. That’s why they have a sergeant or other veteran with them and usually an officer. To put the brakes on misplaced enthusiasms of young and inexperienced men who are being brutalized by the grim realities of war, life and death. They may shout; “Kill ’em all, and let Satan sort them out!” but they usually restrain themselves or they are restrained by the older men, sergeants, and the officers. 18 year old males pumped full of adrenalin can get up to mischief of not properly commanded and controlled. That’s why American NCO’s and junior officers have so much authority to act without orders. They can reign in trouble before it starts and do not need guidance from higher ups to control the troops. That’s why NCOs and junior officers in American forces take classes and are taught how they are expected to behave. That’s also why junior American officers listen more closely to their NCOs than any other army and navy, except maybe the UK/Australia. it is impressed upon them from the beginning of their training as officers to take the advice of their leading sergeants/ petty officers.

This “movie” is a glorified “Apocalypse Now”, and probably about as truthful. “Full Metal Jacket where the gunner was mowing down civilian woman and children and was asked how he can shot innocent women and children, he says; “Easy, you just don’t lead them as far”. It was a common trope in Vietnam, but again, nobody could say they were on the spot when it happened and name names.

JS
JS

My brother was a grunt in Vietnam ’67-’68 and he told me first hand some of the horrible things they did to both VC and civilians who were supporting them. Keep in mind that a lot of the troops were doing drugs to just get through the boredom and the action and they trusted no one. If they are all just stories then was Lt. Calley and the My Lai massacre just a fairytale? Special forces used to hang VC from helicopters to get them to talk and whether they did or not, they got dropped. Napalm was used with impunity on civilian targets. You give way too much credit to NCOs and how green they were when taking over a platoon of battle hardened grunts. Many who were arrogant and putting their men in danger were fragged and that’s not a quote from a movie. It happened. Why do you lie? There are atrocities on all sides of every conflict including the two world wars, Iraq and Afghanistan.

There’s plenty of documentation about US torture and murder in Vietnam. One technique used was to wire the victim’s genitalia to a field radio and administer shocks. There was also the pump-n-dump (torture until death).

One Vietnam vet came back from the war and joined the Chicago police. His name was Jon Burge. He applied what he “learned” in Vietnam had literally tortured hundreds of people. Remarkably, the system resisted taking him down for a long time. It figures.

Plenty of cases where the VC would capture a US soldier, carefully cut his gut open, pull out his lower intestines a bit and tie the soldier up to a tree and wait for the hogs to eat him alive.

Thanks for making me feel young calling me kid. I’m 64 and I think you guys are misunderstanding the points I was trying to make. I come from a military family. Father flew in WW2, oldest brother drafted into Vietnam. Deceased now. The war was over by the time I was military age but my younger brother signed up Army after 9/11 and is still in. He’s finally out of combat and is a DI. I respect every last one of you guys who have served. I was just making some counter arguments from the guy who said soldiers make up stories to make themselves look a certain way. My brother was one of the few who talked about VN. The youngest not so much. That’s it, kid.

HMC/USN/Ret

Your reference to your brother and his war experience clued me in to your likely age window. It is your insistence on allowing anecdotal episodes to load up your paintbrush and with it to compose a comprehensive landscape that suggests to me a definite level of immaturity.

JS
JS

Wonderful retort there HMC. You would make William Faulkner proud. If I wasn’t there to witness the events, of course I would have to use anecdotal episodes to ‘load up my paintbrush and compose a comprehensive landscape’. What a condescending choice of words to try and disparage my comments. I can only go by the accounts of my brother and others whom I’ve spoken with in describing incidents that they either witnessed, participated in or knew of first hand. Could their stories have been embellished? Absolutely. There are also plenty of writings that discuss these subjects at length and in great detail. Regarding your sanctimonious comment about maturity, that’s subjective and since you don’t know me personally, a moot point.

Strap on a weapon, jump on a plane, fly thousands of miles from everything you know, and fight in a land where you can’t tell who the enemy is, then come talk sh#t. I have family that are Marines. My brother talks lightly of killing possible innocents, talked of messing with locals, but he also came home with a steel plate in his head from an IED.

roger
roger

What *exactly* does “talk lightly” mean?

What does “messing with locals” mean? As in an armed soldier bullying civilians? Sounds really brave. You must be proud.

Strapping on a weapon, flying thousands of miles and fighting for fedgov means maybe a steel plate in his skull is not the only problem with his brain? When I check out at the big box home hardware store and they give me the 10% vet discount and say “Thank you for your service”, I almost …… almost ….. have to comment. The effects of the civilian brainwashing is almost too unbelievable.

If you love your kids, you owe it to them to make sure they don’t enter the service.

The noise here is beyond belief. Looks like a classroom full of 10 year olds.

Just how much PERPETUAL war does it take before you will wake up? Just how many governments have to be destroyed for you to wake up? Just how many broken bodies of civilians and soldiers will it take for you to wake up?

You can’t have honor or integrity when those you pledge to serve have NONE. Maybe you’ve missed the fact that the military-industrial-complex is not only asset stripping this nation thru taxes, they were involved in stealing 21+ trillion dollars? Ironic that after they got caught, they changed the FASB accounting rules to take their racketeering dark. We’ve had a coup.

I respect what your brother sacrificed as did my oldest who spent 7 months in the hospital after his patrol was hit by friendly fire from Cobras and he too had a plate in his head but he’s gone now. My younger brother is a SSgt. Scout/Sniper who did multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and took part in the battle of Mozul. He doesn’t speak about any of it. I don’t blame him.

War and the internet are not compatible. You can win wars or you can avoid offending the non-combatant, viewing population, but you can’t do both.

His priorities are totally out of whack.

To “lose track of why we’re actually at war and the underlying issues that are causing it,” – actually has very little to do with what a Marine would have to do in the field.

I knew plenty of scumbags while I was in the military. The scumbags were always kept in check by those with more honorable tendencies. There might be quite a bit of politics in the military, but very few are immoral scum. I hate things that attempt to show the scumbags as the majority of the military. Oliver Stone’s Platoon is a disgusting example of this.

shl

Here’s my personal “take” on our Military men and women. They generally get shipped off to the most horrendous shit holes on this planet. Most times because of the complete failure of politicians to work some “deal” to the agreement of both parties. I can’t even imagine some of the hellish shit these soldiers and sailors have to endure, to SEE (and never “un-see) and function through on a day to day basis. Sometimes month after month. Sometimes year after year. Then they come back here and have to figure out how to integrate what they have been through, into mom and pop land. Fucking head trip extraordinaire’.

So, a “civvie” like me will comp them what ever shit they need to do to get through the day in order to see the next sunrise.

Much respect here. I love my country. I appreciate the efforts of all military personnel, even if the shitbag politicians at the top of the food chain send them on some less than honorable “missions”. I get it. You can’t pick your missions.

Much respect for the Soldiers and Sailors,
shl

Henry Kissinger exemplified the contempt the U.S. Government elite have for the U.S. military personnel when he called them “stupid animals”. U.S. military personnel, their families gave their ALL, good or bad for America. WAR IS HELL. It ain’t no picnic so anyone who thinks we sweep in and fix what’s broke is a fool. U.S. military personnel sacrifice, bleed and repair what is wrong in this world. They are the first line of defense against EVIL. Sometimes when you fight evil you become just as bad but WAR IS HELL. And the NGO’s and government contractors take advantage of U.S. military personnel ALL THE TIME. U.S. military personnel aren’t angels but they are the only ones willing to step into the suck to save others. Ned

Our job was destroying things and killing people. You have to dehumanize them to be able to do it and keep yourself in one piece so you can come home. It’s hard to do. You’re conflicted. Now maybe you can understand the self-medication that takes place, not caring about the enemy’s children (who are often sent to kill you), and the the fact their side doesn’t wear uniforms leading to your desire to just indiscriminately kill them all.

War is hell. It’s the reason we need to quit using our military for every mission under the sun and only activate and deploy when it comes time to overwhelmingly destroy an enemy for a good reason (e.g., WWII). Then, do just that so it is as short as possible and over with and they are no longer able or willing to make trouble for our world. It should be a brief period where they see what hell on earth is. Think Dresden and fire bombing.
