With Trump’s Tough Deterrents, Many Asylum Seekers on the Border Are Giving Up

New York Times

TIJUANA, Mexico — Pushed beyond their limits by prolonged waits in dangerous and squalid conditions in parts of Northern Mexico, thousands of caravan members who had been waiting to seek asylum in the United States appear to have given up, Mexican officials said, dealing President Trump an apparent win after a humbling week for his immigration agenda.

About 6,000 asylum seekers who had traveled en masse, many of them in defiance of Mr. Trump’s exhortations that they were not welcome, arrived in Northern Mexico in late November as part of a caravan that originated in Honduras. Since then, more than 1,000 have accepted an offer to be returned home by the Mexican government, the officials said. Another 1,000 have decided to stay in Mexico, accepting work permits that were offered to them last fall, at the height of international consternation over how to deal with the growing presence of migrant caravans.

Mr. Trump resorted on Friday to declaring a national emergency after he failed to secure funding from Congress for a border wall that he said would block migrants from entering the United States. But the data from Mexican officials suggested that harsh policies he has introduced to crack down on asylum seekers may already be achieving some of its intended effects.

Added this week to new policies that are bearing down on asylum seekers — which include tight limits on the number of people who can apply for the status each day and a heightened standard of proof to qualify — was the extension of a rule that certain asylum seekers must wait in Mexico for the full duration of their legal cases, which can take years.

The requirement originally applied only to adults, but the Department of Homeland Security expanded it to include families with children as well.

Those with legitimate asylum claims are being hampered by hordes of people who come in caravans. Whose bright idea was it to come en masse to the U.S. and expect to be let in, especially after the first caravans didn’t fare so well?

Gregory
Gregory

The whole idea was (and is) to overwhelm our CBP and immigration system causing a total collapse and therefore no-processing entry. This was Soros’ master plan to create an open borders effect. His cronies have been organizing these mass caravans from the beginning and expediting transport along the way since the very first one. The one thing that they didn’t count on was the resolve of PDJT and the real Americans who back him.

You are right about Soros. Way back I read somewhere that this is what he planned.

Traveling through countries to get to the gate is wrong, and hopefully now, fruitless.

You can imagine how much money the caravan organizers are making through fees and promises of getting into the US of A and Europe. These people sell everything pay these bastards. Its the same in Central America and Africa. Nobody moves people across borders for nothing you know.

Anyone else tired of looking at these immigrants at WalMart? They can’t speak English and they try to ask you a question. I tell them to go back to where they came from and learn English.

Not cool. I was at a Winn Dixie a couple of weeks ago. The guy in front of me was an immigrant. He said nothing as his items were tallied.

Winn Dixie uses a customer card that entitles you to a fair price on some of your purchases. He clearly didn’t have a card, so I asked the clerk to use mine. She did. And I saved him a couple of bucks.

I’m lucky to be in a country of my birth that afforded me much more than most on this planet. We can’t possibly allow everyone to be here, but for me helping somebody legally, whether they are legal or not, is how I was raised.

RandyLee
RandyLee

well good for you. but don’t expect your act to be replicated by everyone else because it won’t be. does that make you a better person or just a gullible person?? it doesn’t really matter. I was raised to help my fellow americans, not every illegal who sneaks into my country and starts living off my tax dollars. but it thats makes you feel like a hero, go right ahead.

Frosty

No need to rag on someone with a big heart. Dan seems like a great guy and he probably wouldn’t be here at CFP if he was an open borders guy. Nothing at all wrong with helping another human, ever, no matter who they are or where they come from. I don’t blame the illegals for our shitty immigration system, I blame the globalist politicians we’ve managed to put in office for 3 decades. Cant put out honey and then blame the ants..

ToucheDoritosDos
ToucheDoritosDos

Which is why you put out ant traps. Anyone who forces their way into our country to live off our largesse takes it away from our fellow Americans who need help just as bad as they do. It’s about time we started demanding that Americans be loyal to America and fellow Americans first, last and always. The illegals must force their countrymen to be loyal to them in the same way and watch the “need” to come here dry up.

BTW, most illegal aliens are either coming here to make more money faster to send home, with not one care for the American Dream, or they are economic slaves to the coyotes who tricked them into coming here, or they are criminals in their own countries where getting a job with a record is impossible, or they are cartel crew trafficking drugs or humans disguised as a “poor foreigner just here for a better life (taking a job that would make a better life for an American but who cares about them)” or they are terrorists who can “pass” for South American.

Scoripowarrior
Scoripowarrior

I blame the illegals! They come here and intentionally break our country’s laws by sneaking in. If they want to be “up right” immigrants, they do it the legal way. I do agree that the UN and globalists are a huge part of blame as well.

PotatoChips
PotatoChips

The way to permanently help people in other countries is to put pressure on their governments to reform and to enforce safety. The guy in front of you is probably sending tax free dollars home each month in remittances, in total billions annually across the whole population, which only serves to prop up failed economies.

Scoripowarrior

Yet dumbass leftist/socialists don’t get it! Take AOC as a prime example!

Hope you at least got a thank you from the foreigner.
If he using an ept card, I thank you as well.
All asylum seekers get all the benefits of ‘legal’ refugees.
Housing, food, medical, and education, taken from our wages taken be the boot on our necks.
I prefer we voluntarily offer help, rather than the extortion we currently suffer.
They also commit crimes that they are not held accountable for so they aren’t removed
because the judicial branch is corrupt, favoring some over others, just as they did for Clinton and gang.

ToucheDoritosDos
ToucheDoritosDos

Fully agree. Some judges clearly want the illegals to stay because they tend to vote like they do: Dem.

Scoripowarrior
Scoripowarrior

If these “immigrants” want to come here…insist they have an American CITIZEN who will “sponsor them and help with their financial needs until they can rely on their own resources. That would put a stop to a lot of them being able to come here.

Butt-Hurt-Salve

You did well. The fact that they are illegal does not mean you have to be unkind to them. As someone who has lived as a foreign in other countries for a long time now, someone’s kindness like yours makes my day. Pay no attention to the naysayers.

ToucheDoritosDos

Being charitable to a stranger is everyone’s prerogative. It is not a requirement, nor should it be. Everyone is entitled to be generous to whomever they like — with their own money. But force all of us to do so against our will? That is theft and fascism.

Clichae

Sometimes the Christian way to ‘help’ an alien immigrant is to have him learn & practice the legitimate means & ways & language of his new ‘homeland’ on his own – to assimilate & appreciate rather than expect & receive ‘charity’ that encourages his alien status.

Individual acts of compassion is woven tightly into the American ethos but sanctimonious is no way to live your life. Virtue signalling makes me puke. Coming here and telling all of us that your are the better person is very Democrat Socialist of you. Why didnt you just spew an epithet. Racist! would have had the same effect as your post.

Scoripowarrior

While I admire that you helped this person, I disagree that they should be given “anything” via taxpayers hard earned dollars especially If they come here illegally and are breaking the laws of the very country they are seeking to live in. They can and should apply to come here legally. End of story.

Frankly, the ones in our alleged house of representatives is more concerning now that PDJT appears to be bringing the border problem coming under control.

Renate

Are you talking immigrants or ILLEGAL immigrants? I’m a Legal immigrant and earned my own way, and learned English within 6 months. Don’t lump them all together.

Renate
Renate

Are you talking immigrant or ILLEGAL immigrant? Don’t lump them all together. My Korean legal immigrant daughter in law who speaks wonderful English is treated downright nasty by Most Americans because she LOOKS Hispanic. She is the wonderful wife of my son in law and suffered 15 months while my son was in Iraq. So be careful how you judge people. BTW, I am also a legal Immigrant now naturalized citizen, albeit from Europe. She is being discriminated against because of our stupid, insideous immigration laws and because of of her LOOKS .

Morris
Morris

Koreans don’t look hispanic ! What kind of dope arevyou smoking?

Renate
Renate

Actually, she does. She looks Hispanic, her skin is darker, not lilly white like most Koreans. She looks more Hispanic and is mistreated regularly. I’ve witnessed it myself more than once. The point is, I believe more Americans; and I count myself among Americans, as would my daughter in law; do more readily assume that any non-English speaking person is an illegal. And I believe the reason this may be so is due to the invasion of illegals we are experiencing. Not ALL iimmigrants are illegal and when speaking of illegal immigrants, it needs to be made clear that we are speaking of illegals, NOT legal immigrants. I immigrated to America in 1964 from Germany, legally. IT was an arduous process. I love America, and I hate ILLEGALS just waltzing in. It makes a mockery of Legal immigrants following America’s laws, paying out hundreds of dollars, or in my daughter in law’s case, thousands of dollars to come here the right way. The danger is that we do lump legal immigrants together with the illegals, especially if they look like they are from South of the Border or any of the Southern American people. And, I don’t smoke dope.

Renate
Renate

So, you know a lot of Koreans?

First you say “son in law” then you say “son”, which is it? What does her “suffering” have to do with immigration? She is “Treated Downright Nasty” by “Most Americans”. I don’t believe a word of this. Most Americans don’t treat anyone “nasty”! Why would you or anyone want to be a citizen in the U.S. if we treat people “nasty? I would not want to live in a country like that. Why do you? Fake Story!

Renate
Renate

Maybe you should read what I wrote. I am speaking of my DAUGHTER IN LAW who married my son.

Renate
Renate

I am speaking of my DAUGHTER IN LAW who married my son. Yes, I see I miswrote son in law and thus see your confusion. But, I’m sorry that you seem to be so naive to believe that we Americans are as pure as the driven snow. All people have prejudices, including we Americans. I was writing in response to “goldenfoxx ” who was not being nice to a person he assumed was an immigrant. He didn’t differentiate between legal and illegal. I’m assuming “goldenfoxx” is an American. I understand his frustration at people in this country not speaking English. It galls me to no end. But, he was not being nice to that non-English speaker BECAUSE he didn’t speak English and Hinting he was illegal, yet calling him an immigrant. So he let him have it and yelled at him to speak English. Great way to make friends and influence people. I believe certain people assume my daughter in law is an illegal, thus the treatment. I myself was constantly saluted with heel clicks and ‘Heil Hitler” and called Kraut Head when I first came here because I was different. It wasn’t nice, but it eventually stopped. It hasn’t stopped for her, however. She will never look American, even though she soon will be an American. Yes, Virginia, we Americans can be nasty to others that don’t look like ourselves. But does that mean ALL Americans act that way? Of course not! So I could care less if you believe my story. I don’t lie.

Regarding that big 1980 blip . . .

Back in 1988, I was working on a new computer room for an Insurance Co. near the Miami FL Airport. We were working jointly with a local Consulting Engineering firm that happened to be owned and manned by Cuban immigrants(early 60’s). Great knowledge; great communication; great guys. Over lunches they brought up multiple times their displeasure with the Mariel Boat Lift group of Castro’s Cuban prison convicts. Think Al Pacino in Scarface. So the original 1960 Cuban refugees did not like or “send for” the new 1980 Cuban refugee group.

Guatemala Intel Minister: Migrant Caravans Are ‘Well-Planned,’ Not Spontaneous
February 14, 2019
by Kristina Wong, Breitbart:

“Guatemalan head of intelligence Mario Duarte said during a visit to Washington Tuesday that the migrant caravans heading to the U.S. southern border are “well-planned” and “well-organized” by those wanting to “weaponize those in need.”

This was not a spontaneous event. It was well-planned. It was well-organized,” Duarte, head of the Secretariat of Strategic Intelligence of Guatemala, said at an event hosted by the Center for a Free Secure Society at the National Press Club.

He said different intelligence, law enforcement, and military agencies found evidence that the October caravan from Honduras to the U.S. — which at one point contained about 40,000 migrants — was organized in advance.

There was a call on October 5 in Honduras for citizens to join a “massive migration walk to the United States,” he said. “We detected logistical preparation throughout Guatemala and Mexico, to be able to bring all these people to the U.S. southern border.”

He said the main organization behind the caravans was a non-governmental organization based out of Chicago, called Pueblos Sin Fronteras, led by organizer and pastor Emma Lozano.”
